
1846: Explorer John Ainsworth Horrocks was accidentally shot and killed in a hunting accident at Penwortham, South Australia. Horrocks was one of the first European settlers in South Australia's Clare Valley, where he founded the village of Penwortham in 1840. After his death, he was buried in St. Mark's Episcopal Church.
1965: Lawyer and judge Roma Mitchell was appointed to the Supreme Court of South Australia, becoming the first Australian woman to do so. Mitchell was a pioneer in Australia's women's rights movement and the first woman in Australia to be made Queen's Counsel (1962) and Chancellor of an Australian university. She was also Australia's first female governor. In 1982, Roman Mitchell was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
1993: In 1991, Sydney began its bid to host the 2000 Olympics. At the time, Sydney's main rival was Beijing, and the vote was close until the final decision. On September 23, 1993, International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch announced in Monte Carlo that Sydney, Australia, would be the host country for the 2000 Olympic Games. Sydney Olympics success was attributed to its emphasis on athlete safety and greater focus on the environment.
2009: A huge dust storm has swept through parts of eastern Australia. Crimson and orange dust blanketed the city's main landmarks, with 16,000 tonnes of dust an hour blowing in from the west and blowing across much of the state in winds of up to 100 kilometers an hour. The impact on the NSW economy was estimated to be tens of millions of dollars.
2022: Communities on the Queensland and New South Wales border were being evacuated from flood-prone areas as they face the threat of flooding after more than 20 centimeters of rain fell in three hours. A strong weather system moved eastward overnight, sweeping across the Gold Coast and already soggy northern NSW rivers, forcing some residents to receive emergency text messages.
