STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — It was around 3:45 a.m. Friday morning when Steven Dubester, an admitted “night owl,” was sitting and streaming a series on Apple TV alongside his dog Seaver. Dubester heard a sudden crash from outside his Annadale home, and Seaver went “bananas.”

Dubester stepped outside to find his 2020 Toyota RAV4 no longer parked where he had left it in front of his Jefferson Boulevard home. Down the block, he heard a car horn wailing and assumed he was witnessing his own vehicle being driven away with its alarm going off.

“I ran out into the street right in my socks and looked down the block,” Dubester told the Advance/SILive.com. “He was still driving, and I had my phone in my hand calling 911. But he was long gone by that time.”
