CARSON CITY, Nev. (KOLO) - Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has vetoed a bill that would have prevented those convicted of hate crimes from owning guns.

Senate Bill 89 would have prohibited anyone convicted of a misdemeanor hate crime from possessing guns for up to 10 years after their conviction.

The bill’s sponsor, Senator Julie Pazina, says the veto is a setback considering the recent attacks in Colorado and Texas.

Other supporters of the bill say the Governor is choosing to not protect Nevada’s most vulnerable citizens.

The Governor has not released a statement on why he vetoed the bill.
