In recent years, large gatherings have proven to be at risk for fights turning into shootings, with a mass shooting in Jefferson County being the latest in a growing list.

One Mississippi sheriff is taking a proactive step to boost safety in such situations.

On Wednesday night, Sheriff Edward Goods at Claiborne County posted on the Sheriff’s Department Facebook page that all outdoor events have to be shut down by dark.

Some commenters questioned what closing by dark will help if someone is determined to shoot people, and the sheriff’s department replied that it’s just a step to keep possible perpetrators from trying to hide under the cover of dark when law enforcement could be at a little more of a disadvantage. Most of the commenters, however, seem to support the decision.
