When I was first elected governor of Florida in 1998, I made reforming Florida’s public education system a priority.
One pillar of those reforms was ensuring families had more options to educate their children. We knew then that one model does not work for every student. Parents must be able to choose from a diverse array of learning environments to find the best fit for their child’s individual needs.
We planted the seeds, and a quarter-century later, they are bearing abundant fruit.
Newly released data from the Florida Department of Education shows that for the first time, the majority of Florida’s 3.5 million K-12 students use an education option chosen by their family. It’s a historic milestone that offers a preview of the future of public education for the rest of the country.
