Nearly a quarter of drivers (24%) have not had an eye test in the past two years, according to a new survey. The study, commissioned by insurance firm Churchill, raises concerns about the lack of mandatory vision checks for drivers after their driving test.
In the UK, as part of the driving test, candidates must read a number plate from 20 metres away, but this is the only instance where they need to demonstrate adequate vision for driving. The NHS advises people to get their eyes tested every two years.
Drivers are expected to voluntarily report any medical conditions that could impair their driving ability. In April, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander received a prevention of future deaths report from HM Senior Coroner for Lancashire Dr James Adeley, which was linked to
