GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - The first Friday of June means National Donut Day. It’s not just a sweet reason to celebrate, it actually has a historical connection to the Salvation Army.

All Uncle Mike’s Bake Shoppe locations are giving out a free donut from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. -- and this donut comes with a history lesson.

It’s made with the original World War I recipe used by women sent by the Salvation Army to the front lines to provide treats to the men who were serving our country.

It was easy for the women to make some dough and fry it up for the soldiers. The women were known as “donut lassies.”

National Donut Day was established in 1938 as a fundraiser to benefit people in need during the Great Depression while honoring the donut lassies.
