An adult and a 3-year-old child died after an SUV crashed into a retention pond in West Jefferson, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.
A 29-year old woman was driving a Jeep Cherokee westbound on U.S. Route 40 at 6:25 June 5 when the SUV went off the right side of the road, striking a ditch and coming to rest in a retention pond, the West Jefferson post of the highway patrol said in a news release.
Law enforcement and EMS pulled the driver and four passengers, including two children, from the vehicle, according to the news release.
Kelita Alfred, 27, of Columbus, and the 3-year-old child were transported to OhioHealth Doctors Hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.
Another child, age 5, was taken to Nationwide Children's Hospital with injuries that were not life threatening.
