Suspended Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez, jailed Thursday on racketeering charges , must post a $1 million bond if he wants to be free while awaiting trial on charges he allegedly helped run a clandestine casino before and during his time as sheriff, a judge said Friday.
Judge Emily Curington set the bond — $500,000 for each of his charges, racketeering and conspiracy to commit racketeering — during Lopez’s first appearance Friday, over the objections of his attorney, who asked for bail to be set at $50,000.
While usually seen in his traditional green sheriff’s uniform, Lopez attended the online hearing dressed like any other jail inmate — in an orange jumpsuit.
“How do I get the bail process started?” he asked the judge from his Lake County jail cell.
