AYER, Mass. —

Severe storms moved across parts of Worcester and Middlesex counties in Massachusetts early Friday and left a trail of damage.

Ayer police said many of the major roadways into town from the east and north were blocked by downed trees and live wires.

In Shirley, there were reports of more than 20 trees down on Walker Road, and some residents said they've never seen this type of damage.

"I was in the shower getting ready for work, and my wife came up and yelled, 'Get out of the shower. There is a storm.' I could hear rumbling and hail hitting the house," resident Scott Wade said. "I came and opened the door, and I could see rain going straight across. It wasn't even coming down; it was going at an angle. I went to go close the door, and all of a sudden I saw tree branches,
