HOTCHKISS, Colo. (KREX) — After nearly four decades, the Miners Trail in the North Fork Valley will offer North Fork High School students the ability to avoid busy Highway 92 on their commutes to class.

The 1.2-mile non-motorized trail is named in honor of the area's history and the high school's mascot.

The Miners Trail starts near the Delta County Fairgrounds, just off Doc Maloney Way, crosses the North Fork Gunnison River and runs parallel to Highway 92.

North Fork High School Sophomore Klara Kiss says, "It's a safer route for anyone that wants to come up here [to North Fork High School] or, even students that want to walk down to town on their lunch break."
