Many are familiar with the tendency for these aquatic insects to swarm the banks of the Susquehanna from the month of May through July. City Island's own Harrisburg Senators even play as an alternate identity in homage to FNB Field's most infamous guests.

But what do mayflies even do?

There are more than 700 different kinds of mayflies in North America, according to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission -- 300 of those call PA home.

Mayflies start their lives as eggs, nested at the bottom of lakes, streams, rivers and ponds. Eventually, they grow into nymphs, which is how they'll spend a year of their lives.
