A Peoria police officer killed a man cornered in a cul-de-sac after he had approached a woman and her child and attempted to grab the child, a Peoria Police Department spokesperson said.

Police identified the man who was killed as Matthew Paul Cardon, 43, of Peoria. Glendale police investigators, who were looking into the shooting as part of the West Valley Investigative Response Team, have concluded Cardon had mental health issues and did not know the woman.

At about 6:45 p.m. June 5, police responded to a call of a man trying to kidnap a woman, Sgt. Araceli Montes said. The woman was walking her child in a baby stroller inside a gated community just east of Loop 101 and south of Thunderbird Road.

Montes said the man approached the woman from behind and "bear-hugged" her.
