TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Friday is National Gun Violence Awareness Day, and a Florida State student is speaking out about the April 17 shooting on campus and the impact it left on them and their community.

In a statement shared through Florida Rep. Kevin Chambliss, FSU student Naomi King reflected on the impacts of the shooting.

“If the loss of innocent lives is not enough to compel change, then it is up to those of us who have survived to speak up,” they said.

King also condemned the response to gun violence in the U.S., pushing for change by saying in part, “I appreciate politicians keeping us in their prayers, but that is not what we need from them right now. We need action. This was not ‘just another shooting.
