CHEROKEE COUNTY, S.C. —

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office announced a new chief deputy on Friday.

Sheriff Steve Mueller said Maj. Billy Anthony was being promoted to fill the role, effective immediately.

Muller said Anthony has more than 24 years of law enforcement service, dedication and commitment to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.

Anthony's promotion comes after former Chief Deputy Jeffery Stephens was selected by Gov. Henry McMaster to be the interim sheriff of Spartanburg County.
