Several weeks ago, The Journal Gazette received a call asking for help finding an archive photo from the Caswell-Runyan fire in Huntington. Unfortunately I don’t believe I was unable to find the specific photo the caller was searching for, but I did find some dramatic images from this day in history.
As smoke rose over Huntington on June 7, 1962, about 140 firefighters from the area converged on a blaze that caused an estimated $3 million in damage.
In what media reports called the worst fire in Huntington’s history, the blaze appeared to begin in the center of the old Caswell-Runyan building and spread to the nearby Utah Radio Products Co. plant. It also destroyed the woodworking plant of Adolph H. Schenkel in a western section of the old structure.
