The decision from Miles Byrd to forgo this year’s NBA Draft and return to San Diego State brings about a potentially intense offseason debate: Who is the best returning player in the Mountain West?

Byrd, along with Utah State guard Mason Falslev, are the only athletes that earned All-Mountain West honors that will be back for 2025-26. The rest are gone, through either exhausting their eligibility or leaving via the transfer portal.

So is it just these two players that top the list? Not really. Prior to Byrd's decision to withdraw, Utah State head coach Jerrod Calhoun said that Falslev, along with Byrd's SDSU teammate Magoon Gwath are the top two candidates for Mountain West Preseason Player of the Year.
