The 157th running of the Belmont Stakes belongs to Sovereignty!

Sunday's final leg of the Triple Crown pitted Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty against Preakness Stakes champion Journalism in a 1 1/4 mile rematch of their early May showdown at Churchill Downs. Journalism (2-1) went off as the favorite on a fast track at Saratoga Race Course, which again hosted The Test of Champions as Belmont Park continues undergoing renovations.

Journalism tried to pull a move from third to first with a quarter mile left in the race, but Sovereignty (5-2) was a step quicker, overtaking Journalism on the final stretch in a battle that lived up to the hype.

It's the second victory at the Belmont Stakes for trainer Bill Mott, who chose to hold Sovereignty out of the Preakness.

The three biggest thoroughbred races in the United States delivered as much intrigue and excitement as possible for a season without a Triple Crown contender. Sunday's conclusion was a perfect final act.
