HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — Students at Harrisburg City elementary schools celebrated their early dismissal today with some ice cream.

Hershey Creamery donated the ice cream, which the Harrisburg Police Community Service Division helped pass out as part of the "Welcome to Summer" ice cream social. Leaders say they hope to continue the event year after year.

"Anything that the Harrisburg Bureau of Police can do, along with our partners like Hershey Creamery, to get these kids in the right mindset to actually enjoy summer, to have summer, to be safe during summer, we're all for it," said Captain Russell Winder Jr.

Students at Melrose Elementary School seemed to agree and are excited for the summer to begin.
