SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The South Carolina Department of Transportation Commission approved the updated project plans for the U.S. 278 Partner Project.

Now, the State Infrastructure Bank will grant $120 million for a new three-lane eastbound bridge.

As WTOC has covered over recent years, this project has had its share of hiccups, from local legislation and a failed sales tax vote to state leaders disapproving of bridge design plans.

On July 17 at the SCDOT Commission Meeting , transportation leaders voted to approve the updated project scope, which, “introduces key changes intended to cut costs, reduce delays, avoid disrupting a waterline that supplies 20% of the island’s drinking water, and replaces the aging bridge from the Bluffton Parkway flyover to the Windmill Harbor intersection
