CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WPRI) — The co-owner of a Cumberland restaurant was arrested earlier this month, accused of sexually assaulting a minor, according to police.

Assad Awan, 27, of East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, was taken into custody July 11 while boarding an international flight at JFK International Airport in New York.

Police said Awan is one of the owners of Ani's Pizza and Seafood on High Street.

He was wanted by Cumberland police on charges including two counts each of first-degree domestic sexual assault, domestic assault by strangulation, domestic simple assault/battery, and domestic disorderly conduct.

Police said the victim was a juvenile at the time of the alleged assaults, which occurred earlier this year. Awan and the victim reportedly knew each other.
