Colorado Parks and Wildlife biologists have determined that a gray wolf found dead in Rocky Mountain National Park in April was likely killed by a mountain lion, or cougar.

While mountain lion attacks on wolves do occur, they’re considered rare and usually involve a young or injured wolf away from its pack.

National Parks Traveler announced the news late Wednesday, attributing Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

The wolf carcass was recovered after its research collar issued a mortality (non-movement) signal on April 20.

CPW and the National Park Service later confirmed that the wolf died inside Rocky Mountain National Park.

Gray wolves were reintroduced into Colorado in 2023 as part of a management plan that initially involved 10 animals.
