A Chuck E. Cheese mascot was arrested in Tallahassee, Florida, on charges of debit card theft. The incident occurred Wednesday night when a customer reported the alleged theft to the police. The 41-year-old suspect, Jermel Jarreau Jones, was dressed in a full Chuck E. Cheese costume when officers confronted him around 7:30 p.m. at the restaurant.
According to the Tallahassee Police Department's arrest report, Officer Jarrett Cruz approached Jones and instructed him to come with him. The report states that Jones initially resisted arrest, tensing up and attempting to pull away. Cruz wrote, "I gave the verbal commands to 'stop resisting, you are being detained.'" Officers had to use minor physical force to place Jones in handcuffs.
While still in costume, Jones was escorted out of the restaurant. Police removed his oversized Chuck E. Cheese head and discovered a debit card in his pants pocket. This card had been reported stolen during a child's party at the restaurant on June 28.
Jones faces felony charges for larceny of a debit card, possession of another person's identification without consent, and for allegedly using the stolen card six times. The report indicates that he made purchases at various locations, including a smoke shop, a meat market, and a Whataburger.
When questioned by police, Jones denied stealing the card, claiming he found it and intended to turn it in to lost and found. A spokesperson for Chuck E. Cheese confirmed the incident, stating, "We are aware of an incident involving a part-time employee arrested at our Tallahassee location on Wednesday, July 23. We have taken the appropriate action concerning the subject employee. The police have not reached out to us about this; please contact the local Tallahassee police department for any questions."
The victim of the debit card theft took matters into her own hands. After noticing unusual charges on her card, she visited a meat market where the card was used and obtained security footage. She recognized Jones as the person in the video and contacted the police. Upon arriving at the Chuck E. Cheese, she confirmed Jones was working there and expressed her desire to press charges.
The police report details that when an officer entered the restaurant, Jones appeared startled, gazing with wide eyes and tensing his shoulders. Officers later confirmed his identity with a female employee, who indicated that he was indeed the one in the mascot suit.
