ATLANTA (WJBF) - A new school year means new education laws go into effect in Georgia, with many focusing on school safety and a better learning environment for students.

House Bill 874 is now into effect and requires all K-12 public schools to have an automated external defibrillator (AED) and an emergency action plan in place.

It also requires CPR training for school staff and emergency drills for fast response.

Another new law mandates public schools to transfer student records to a new school system within five business days.

Senate Bill 123, now going into law, addresses chronic absenteeism in schools which bans schools from expelling students solely due to absences and requiring school to have an attendance review plan.
