The steady stream of brand-new crayons, spiral notebooks and wooden pencils that flowed to the school supply drive in a southwest valley parking lot was more than enough to fill the school bus that stood as a bright yellow beacon drawing in donors.

The annual Fill the Bus drive, held Thursday by Communities in Schools of Nevada, is another sign that the school year is quickly approaching.

The supplies, from the pencils and crayons to backpacks and lunchboxes, will stock the resource rooms that Communities in Schools occupies at about 80 high-needs schools in Southern Nevada. When students return to school Aug. 11, these supplies will be there, along with snacks, clothing, shoes and hygiene products.
