A New Orleans inmate was mistakenly released from jail last week, prompting a manhunt. The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office confirmed that 30-year-old Khalil Bryan was freed from the same facility where ten inmates escaped in May. Bryan was being held on serious charges, including aggravated assault with a firearm, domestic abuse, and home invasion.
Sheriff Susan Hutson stated that Bryan's release was due to a clerical error. Another inmate with a similar last name was scheduled for release, leading to the mix-up. "The mistaken release of Khalil Bryan was a serious error, and as sheriff, I take full responsibility," Hutson said during a press conference.
Bryan was released shortly after 1 a.m. on Friday, but the public was not informed until later that afternoon. It remains unclear when deputies realized the mistake or when the sheriff was notified. Hutson emphasized that the public deserves better and that an investigation into the incident has been launched.
The sheriff's office is under scrutiny, especially since the May escape involved ten inmates who removed a toilet from the wall to flee. Most of those escapees have been recaptured, but one remains at large. Hutson described that incident as an "inside job," and several individuals have been charged with aiding the escapees.
Political analysts suggest that this latest error could complicate Hutson's re-election campaign. Clancy Dubos noted that the delayed notification to the public about Bryan's release, especially given his violent history, raises concerns. "The public doesn't know for almost 15 hours. And the person has a history of violence is out there on the loose," Dubos said.
As of now, two inmates, including Bryan, are unaccounted for. The sheriff's office is facing additional challenges, as Hutson was recently found in contempt of court for not staffing weekend court hearings. She is scheduled for sentencing on that charge on August 4, which could result in fines for each violation.
