Homeowners will be able to apply for My Safe Florida Home, a popular home-hardening grant program that could help residents cut property-insurance costs, starting on Monday, Aug. 4.

The Florida Legislature has allocated $280 million in funding that will go to inspections and grants of up to $10,000 to help residents make storm-related upgrades and qualify for property-insurance discounts.

Applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis and in order of priority:

Low-income homeowners age 60+

Low-income homeowners

Moderate-income homeowners age 60+

Moderate-income homeowners

To be eligible, the homes must be a single-family, detached residential property or a townhouse. The owner must be living there, and the home insured for $700,000 or less. Low-income homeowners
