Bennie R. “Ben” Click, who led the Dallas Police Department for six years and was credited with steering the agency toward a more community-focused approach to law enforcement, died Sunday afternoon in Mississippi, where he had retired.
His son, James Click, said Monday that his father died peacefully of an illness while at home with family. He was 84.

Click served as Dallas police chief from 1993 to 1999, arriving in Texas after a nearly 30-year stint with the Phoenix police department, where he had risen to the position of executive assistant police chief.
