Gunfire rang out in a Harvey neighborhood Monday night when authorities say a man shot and killed his girlfriend before taking his own life.

The Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office identified the woman as Bryisha Pennington, 39. The man was identified as Laymon Adams, 29, of Terrytown.

The shootings occurred about 11:30 p.m. inside Pennington's home in the 500 block of Third Avenue , according to Capt. Jason Rivarde, spokesperson for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

Though Pennington had only lived there for about six months, authorities had twice been dispatched to the residence to investigate disturbances involving the couple, according to the Sheriff's Office.
