LUBBOCK, Texas -- A Lubbock native aims to help farmers find solutions to conserve water.

Texas A&M doctoral student Christopher Cobos grew up in Lubbock before earning his bachelor's degree at West Texas A&M and his master's at Texas Tech. He is now a senior research assistant under Dr. Katie Lewis at the Texas A&M Agrilife Research and Extension Center in Lubbock.

For the past five years, Cobos has been researching ways for producers to conserve water in their fields. He said one of his main goals is to find a way for farmers to grow cover crops that can keep soil in place without depleting excess water from their next cotton crop. Another option would require farmers to rotate crops or let their fields lie fallow.
