Many Peoria and Glendale schools start classes Thursday, July 31 and into next week, so local police are offering tips to encourage students, families and drivers to practice back-to-school safety.

Walking to school is now safer and simpler. The city of Peoria in partnership with the Maricopa Association of Governments has developed an interactive map with safe walking routes to every elementary school in Peoria in the Peoria Unified School District and the Deer Valley Unified School District. Here are some tips for staying safe:

• If your child is walking to school, plan the route ahead and choose the safest path with the least street crossings;
