MARLBORO COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) -- Marlboro County authorities are investigating a "heinous act" involving a malnourished puppy found clinging to life Wednesday afternoon after being left for dead in a storage tote by a trash pile.

The Humane Society of Marlboro County said a good Samaritan found the 6- to 8-month-old puppy while picking up trash on the side of the road.

"Every time we think we have seen the worst of human treatment towards animals, a new kind of hateful and heinous act like this shocks us all over again," the shelter society said in a Facebook post shared by the Marlboro County Sheriff's Office.

The woman who found the female puppy took it to the Bennettsville Animal Hospital, the shelter said. The puppy they named Journey had a body temperature of 108 degrees, and staff
