The popular artificial sweetener sucralose—found both in packets and diet sodas—might not be the best choice for patients having cancer treatment .

A study by the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center suggests the popular sugar substitute for people who may be cutting calories or managing blood sugar levels could make immunotherapy less effective.

Researchers found that patients with melanoma (the most dangerous type of skin cancer) and non-small cell lung cancer (the most common type of lung cancer) who consumed high levels of sucralose had worse responses to immunotherapy and poorer survival than those with diets low in the sweetener.
