Jonathan Butler, the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, has been making music globally for more than half a century. During the Apartheid era in his native South Africa, he was the first non-white artist to get national exposure on radio and television.

Influenced by the American sounds of the 1970s, he first came to the United States in his early 20s and put down roots in jazz, R&B, and later gospel and praise music. But South Africa and its music have always remained.

On Friday, Aug. 1, Butler will perform in Charlotte at the newly renovated Carolina Theatre.

Ahead of his visit, we spoke by phone about his life, his music and how his faith in God has influenced both. Here are some excerpts, slightly edited for length and clarity.
