Double Olympic champion Laura Dahlmeier has died at the age of 31.

According to The Associated Press , the German biathlon champion died on a mountain in northern Pakistan after a climbing accident on Monday.

At the time, she was climbing up Laila Peak in the Karakoram mountain range on Monday when she and her climbing partner were struck by falling rocks.

Her partner, who CNN identified as Marina Eva, tried to rescue Dahlmeier for several hours, but it became impossible due to the terrain and continuous rockfall, according to a statement on Dahlmeier’s Instagram page. Eva also sent out a distress signal for Dahlmeier, but decided to evacuate the area after no longer hearing signs of life.
