The state Senate has passed a bill to require all public schools to ban student use of cellphones.

The measure passed 38-2.

Many Greater New Bedford schools largely already have policies in place that ban cellphones.

The Massachusetts state Senate has passed a bill that would require all public schools to ban students’ use of cell phones during learning time.

The bill, if it becomes law, would have the state Department of Education create a model policy that schools could follow , and require public schools in grades K-12 to prohibit “the use of personal electronic devices on school grounds during the school day.”

The measure passed 38-2 on Thursday, with only Republican state Sen. Kelly Dooner of Taunton and state Sen. Ryan Fattman of Sutton opposed.
