Starting in 2026, popular candies such as Skittles, M&M's, Starburst, and Extra Gum will be free of artificial colors. Mars Wrigley North America announced this change last month, stating that it will eliminate Food, Drug & Cosmetic (FD&C) colors from its products across four categories: gum, fruity confections, and chocolate candy.
The first products to be available without FD&C colors will include M&M's Chocolate, Skittles Original, Extra Gum Spearmint, and Starburst Original fruit chews. This decision marks a significant shift for the candy maker, which aims to respond to growing consumer demand for natural ingredients.
Mars Wrigley first revealed its plans on July 24. In a news release, the company emphasized its commitment to innovation and consumer choice. "Mars Wrigley North America has been on an innovation journey over the past few years, dedicated to bringing products that provide consumers delicious choices when they treat," the company stated.
The company also noted its close engagement with regulators and its awareness of the ongoing discussions regarding food colors. "All our products meet the high standards and applicable regulations set by food safety authorities around the world, including the FDA," it added.
Mars Wrigley is currently exploring alternatives to synthetic color additives that meet safety criteria and consumer preferences. Once a viable solution is identified, the company plans to provide updates on the timing and specific product commitments.
"Our team in North America is always working hard for our consumers and in partnership with our stakeholders to make positive contributions to the treating and snacking categories," the company concluded. Further updates on this initiative will be provided as they become available.
