Boston acquired May ahead of Major League Baseball's trade deadline, amid speculation that the team was targeting Twins pitcher Joe Ryan.
On Wednesday, the Red Sox also acquired 34-year-old left-handed reliever Steven Matz from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for prospect Blaze Jordan.
Matz has a 3.44 ERA this season and is expected to provide some help in the bullpen.
