VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) -- A man drowned at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront Thursday morning after police say he fell from his surfboard due to a medical emergency.

According to police, officers were dispatched to 16th Street and the Boardwalk just before 7 a.m. on Thursday, July 31 for the report of a drowning.

Police confirmed the man died following this incident.

Witnesses say the man fell off his surfboard following a medical emergency.

“It looked like something happened to him in the water, a health condition or something," eyewitness Nader Nasseredine said. "He took in so much water the gentleman who said he found him stomach down head down in the water, and he was floating, his board was attached to him. His paddle was all the way down the beach.”
