It's not uncommon for a baseball player to be sent to another team before the annual trade deadline.

Less common? Being traded to a team you are actively competing against.

That happened Thursday to Tampa Bay Rays infielder José Caballero when he we was sent to the New York Yankees for outfielder Everson Pereira.

The transaction happened after a long rain delay in a contest eventually won by the Yankees, 7-4.

According to the Rays website , Caballero said some goodbyes to teammates, packed his bags and walked over to the Yankees clubhouse to join his new team.

“Everything happened so quickly,” said Caballero, who started at second base for the Rays and ended the day with the opponent.
