Ontario's police watchdog is investigating the death of a 62-year-old man while interacting with Hamilton officers.

At about 7:30 a.m. on Friday, a man contacted Hamilton police saying he had explosive devices, said the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in a news release.

He "demanded" a negotiator come to his home near Barton Street East and Sherman Avenue North, the SIU said.

"Police contained the residence, and negotiations took place throughout th day with the barricaded man," said the SIU.

Police sent a drone into the home in the late afternoon and found he'd died.

"It revealed the man lying on the floor, blood visible around him," said the news release.
