AUSTIN, Texas — Texas residents packed a public hearing Monday at the State Capitol to oppose Texas’ proposed redistricting plans.
At a nearly five-hour hearing, more than 50 people testified, most warning the maps are unfair and politically motivated. Republicans are under pressure from Donald Trump to gain House seats in 2025, while Democrats call the process blatant gerrymandering.
“This is not redistricting this is rig-districting. It is an absolute farce and disrespectful to every black and brown citizen and I will not stand by,” State Sen. Borris Miles, D-Houston, said.
The move comes as the Department of Justice has raised concerns that four of the state’s congressional districts were drawn unconstitutionally based on racial factors.
