WASHINGTON, D.C. (LOOTPRESS) – Starting September 30, the federal government will stop issuing paper checks for most federal payments, including Social Security benefits.

The move is part of a modernization effort aimed at saving money and reducing financial fraud.

Currently, fewer than 1% of beneficiaries—about half a million people—still receive paper checks.

Those individuals will need to switch to either direct deposit or a government-issued prepaid debit card known as Direct Express.

While the change is mandatory for most, some exceptions will be granted. Waivers may be available for people who are age 90 or older, have a mental impairment, or live in very remote areas.

Recipients who believe they qualify for an exemption can apply for a waiver at https://godirect.gov/gpw/.
