GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) - Social Security will stop sending paper checks starting Sept. 30.
This is part of a broader effort to modernize the delivery of federal benefits, according to the Social Security Administration.
Roughly one percent of all Social Security beneficiaries still receive their payments through paper checks.
Under the new policy, they will be required to choose one of two electronic options. Either direct deposit into a bank account, or payment via a pre-paid debit card known as Direct Express.
The U.S. Treasury Department said the change is aimed at reducing fraud and cutting costs.
