The Sheffield Wednesday players have released a collective statement urging the club to address the wages situation and avoid a cancellation of this weekend’s clash with Leicester City.

The wages for Wednesday’s threadbare squad have been delivered late in four of the past five months and it’s thrown the Championship opener at the King Power Stadium into doubt.

Amid the late payments, Wednesday players withdrew from a scheduled friendly with Burnley over the weekend.

There is naturally concern that they may also refuse to play against City on Sunday afternoon. In that scenario, the EFL board would decide what happens next, with an attempt to rearrange the game the most likely outcome.
