A study testing four different types of colorectal cancer screening in people aged 45 to 49 years showed unsolicited, mailed fecal immunochemical test (FIT) kits achieved the best uptake in screening.

However, overall uptake was less than 30% even for the mailed FIT kits, which the researchers say, “underscores the need for more effective strategies to engage this group.”

Colorectal cancer rates in the U.S. have increased in people younger than 50 years by at least two percent a year over the past decade, which has led to recommendations of extending screening to younger groups.
