Newton Police Chief Will Jackson says a man accused of burglarizing two houses over the weekend has been arrested.

Chief Jackson said Matthew Cole Maness, 29, of Jasper, first broke into a house in the 200 block of Henson Street and ransacked drawers, but he didn’t steal anything. Jackson said Maness then broke into a house in the 200 block of Jackson Street and he stole items.

According to Jackson, the Newton County Sheriff’s Department assisted his officers with the investigation which led them to Maness. Jackson said Maness was brought in for questioning and investigators obtained enough information to obtain an arrest warrant.

Maness was arrested on Monday and charged with Burglary of a Habitation and Criminal Attempt to Burglarize a Habitation.
