Students in Perry County — went back to school Monday — and officials say despite some significant changes from last school year — the new year got off to a smooth start.

One of the biggest changes — is that students are no longer allowed to have cell phones during school time. Devices brought to school by students — will be collected by staff — sealed in pouches — and stored away until the end of the day.

“And it just diminishes the distraction so that they can concentrate on getting the content that they need to be successful,” said Dr. Marcia Smiley.

The district also added electronic key card systems at both of its schools to upgrade school security.
