MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Texas Democratic lawmakers have stopped their GOP’s new congressional maps, for now, by fleeing the state. The new maps, if passed, would favor Republicans, likely flipping five seats in their favor.
By leaving the state, these Democrats denied a quorum, meaning there were not enough lawmakers present to be able to move forward.
However, this is not the first time Democrats have fled to protest a vote. It happened in Wisconsin in 2011 in response to Act 10, which ended collective bargaining rights.
“We decided basically spur of the moment to leave the state,” Mark Miller, the former minority leader in the Wisconsin State Senate said.
