DEKALB CO., Ala. ( WAFF ) - Two truck drivers traveling through Dekalb County are some of the first to be ticketed for not speaking English since a President Trump executive order went into effect in June.

“The English language proficiency standard has been there for a long time,” Mark Colson, the President and CEO of the Alabama Trucking Association, said.

President Trump’s order reinforced a policy that’s been in place since the 1930s. Guidelines under the Obama administration loosened enforcement and lowered penalties. Now, this ticket results in taking the driver off the road.

“It’s all about safety, it’s all about being able to read the rules of the road, being able to communicate with law enforcement and the general public,” Colson said.
